Tunji

Tunji is a classic emcee with vision. The Cali native pairs a straightforward, thoughtful lyrical style with breezy, soul-drenched beats, relatable stories and well-crafted hooks. He makes music that draws from hip hop's past as it also reaches towards the future - "I try to make songs that remind you of why you fell in love with hip hop in the first place, but also take the listener somewhere they've never been before."
Sound good? Check him out at:
tunji.bandcamp.com.
Then, see what inspires this emcee's vision below:
Janelle Monáe - "Neon Valley Street" The most incredible female artist I've heard in about a decade, you could really pick any song from her album The ArchAndroid and it'd make my list. In ten years we'll be looking back on this album as a classic. Janelle is the total package; vocals, performance, originality, style - she's just awesome in every way.
Kanye West - "Power" The production on this song is absolutely INSANE. Kanye can pretty much do no wrong with me (musically, that is).
Little Dragon - "Feather" My lady loves this band - she played their new album so much that I now do too. Their style is a really cool mix of trip hop, future soul, hip hop and forward thinking production. Yukimi Nagano's vocals sound like they're floating right on top of the beat here. Great song.
Eminem - "Talking 2 Myself" feat. Kobe One of the best tracks from Em's best album in a decade, produced by my good friend DJ Khalil. I think Eminem is at his best when he's being honest about his life, and this song chronicles the story of his triumph over addiction perfectly.
Lil Wayne - "Single" Wayne has gone from being one of my least liked artists to one of my absolute favorite rappers in the span of about five years. This is one of my favorite songs from his No Ceilings mixtape - if you've ever been in a relationship, you can definitely relate. His protégé Drake's influence is clearly evident in the production and songwriting here.
Erykah Badu - "Window Seat" People got so caught up in the controversial music video that nobody really acknowledged how great of a song this really is. Breezy production, great songwriting, and the Queen Badu truly in her zone.
TiRon - "Boy & Girls" A good friend of mine and a great artist, TiRon breaks down the ups and downs of unrequited love perfectly on this track from his slept on MSTRD project. If you've ever had your heart broken, you can relate. More people need to hear this kid.
Reflection Eternal - "Ballad Of The Black Gold" Talib Kweli does a great job here, tackling our global dependence on oil from a few different perspectives, including a great verse about Nigeria. Hi-Tek of course killed the beat. One of the best hip hop duos of all time.
Miguel - "All I Want Is You" feat. J. Cole One of the best and most talented rising R&B artists on the scene, this beautiful song was an excellent way to kick off Miguel's career. You can really hear his pain and feel the ache in his heart on this track. J. Cole really comes through on his guest verses as well.
Sonnymoon - "Run Away" I'm really digging these guys - they're a pretty new future soul duo from Massachusetts. I'm hooked on their whole project Golden Age, especially this track.
