On The Record
DECEMBER 2008

Dear Members,

Ludacris, Jermaine Dupri, Mayor VillaraigosaIt's a pleasure to welcome you to the first edition of the members e-zine On The Record. Since joining the Museum in September, I've really enjoyed sharing in the excitement and anticipation of our inaugural year. And as you may know, the Museum celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on December 5, 2008. After which GRAMMY® Award Winners Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Jermaine Dupri and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa welcomed 400 school children into the Museum for our first official visit.

Now almost a month after opening, we are still feeling the positive energy of that day, especially the buzz surrounding the first installment of our public programs series An Evening With - as the Museum's Executive Director Robert Santelli gets set to interview GRAMMY®-winning legend Brian Wilson. From there we continue into an exciting year of firsts full of great programming, very cool educational opportunities and new ways to save using your GRAMMY Museum Membership card.

Happy New Year and thank you for your support!

Curator's Perspective
BUDDY HOLLY'S GIBSON GUITAR
1943 J-45 (used circa 1956)

The Museum is thrilled to have the opportunity to share this guitar with our visitors. Lent by a private collector, Buddy Holly's Gibson J-45it was not only used by Buddy Holly early in his career, but its hand-tooled leather slipcase was created by the famed rock & roller himself.

Holly reportedly busied himself with leatherwork from a young age. For this piece, he skillfully surrounded his name with decorative motifs. The song titles of his first single, "Blue Days, Black Nights" b/w "Love Me", decorate the curves at the guitar's heel, while "Texas," his home state, covers the lowermost curve.

This guitar will only be on display through March, after which it will travel to Seattle's Experience Music Project. Stop by and check it out while you can!

Who's Listening To What?
GRAMMY NOMINEE SAM SPARRO

Nominated for Best Dance Recording for his song Black & Gold, Sam gives us the low down on his favorite tracks to date.

Hold On, Hot Chip - I've been an almost obsessive fan for years. The first time I saw them play it was $5 and there was (maybe) 100 people there. Now they play to thousands and they keep getting better.

Get Innocuous (Soulwax Remix), LCD Soundsystem - I can't seem to do a DJ set without throwing this track in there — it's deep and monotonous (the way I like my disco records) and highly addictive. I love most everything on the DFA label — they've made an incredible mark by making disco records sound like punk records.
